The Life-Changing Power of Speaking Up

Sharing perspectives and addressing issues that champion dynamic ideas to bring about positive change are essential, especially in the family law space. Individuals who speak up believe in the power of their words and want to be transparent. Those who speak up also help to demystify expectations, raise awareness, create a safe space, uplift others, and open a conversation so that others might not feel so alone and envision new paths of purpose for difficult decisions or challenging circumstances.

Leah Remini, 54, and her husband, performer and restaurateur Angelo Pagán, 56, recently announced in a joint Instagram post that they’re getting divorced. The “King of Queens” alum has been married to Angelo Pagán for 21 years.  Remini filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The “Kevin Can Wait” and “Saved by the Bell” alum cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. She checked boxes agreeing to mediation about property and support and to proceed by a stipulated judgment. Neither she nor Pagán is seeking spousal support nor child support, as their daughter, Sofia, is an adult.

Referencing their TV exposure, Remini and Pagán wrote, “We would love for everyone to have more access to different kinds of relationship stories and not feel so isolated in navigating the changes that millions of couples make every year.” They added, “Our bond is still strong — it’s just evolved into something different. We think a marriage that lasted this long and created so many beautiful memories, especially raising our incredible daughter, is something to celebrate.”

For those going through a separation, Leah and Angelo’s definition of relationship success is an honest, touching tribute that speaks volumes about the power of embracing a new tomorrow. “We hope our journey can inspire others to see that relationships — whether they change or end — aren’t failures. From our perspective, this marriage was a huge success. And now, we’re looking forward to creating even more cherished moments — just in a different way.”

In another inspiring example of a high-profile person speaking up for the greater good is TV personality and conservationist Bindi Irwin. In a new Q&A video uploaded to the Australia Zoo YouTube channel, her husband Chandler Powell explained, “She went through a big journey with endometriosis. And basically it was an absolute miracle that we had Grace. We love Grace so much and are reveling in every little moment we have with her, with our little miracle baby.” The statement was in response to people continuously asking, “Will you have more children?”

The daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin echoed her husband’s sentiments and added, “I really appreciate everybody who’s curious to see if we will have another child, but … remember to be careful when you ask this question because you never know what’s happening in someone’s life,” she said. “In a family’s world, everything may seem fine on the outside, and on the inside, their own personal journey might have been filled with turmoil and challenges, that you know, you can’t even fathom.” She maintains that “it’s also a really tricky question for many, many people who maybe can’t have another baby [or] can’t have a baby at all.”
