End of Summer Signals a Surge in Divorce Filings

If back-to-school season has you contemplating divorce, Sara Horowitz Law compassionately and cost-effectively guides you through every step.

Back-to-school signals a surge in divorce filings. When children start a new academic year, it is recognized by Family Law attorneys as a peak period for divorce inquiries, driven by the return to routines, empty-nest transitions, and accumulated stress from family vacations. If you’re one of the many people reevaluating your relationship, you’re not alone.

Summer means spending prolonged, concentrated time with a spouse on vacation, which can amplify marital cracks, unmet expectations, and underlying resentments. If there are problems in the marriage, they often get exacerbated when couples spend more time together. Relatedly, on summer holidays, couples have the time and space to recognize patterns in their relationship that are unhealthy and unfulfilling.

Back-to-school season, like January, is a psychological marker for fresh starts. Parents contemplating a divorce often view the beginning of a new academic year as a practical time to separate as kids are anchored in a daily routine at school.

The traditional divorce model is damaging to the family unit as adversarial methods create conflict. As a result, by focusing on collaborative solutions, couples can move through disagreements without escalating conflict. The pace is set collaboratively, with a collective willingness to adjust throughout the journey. At its core, Collaborative Divorce helps divorcing couples lower costs, lessen conflict, and maintain control over decisions affecting their lives and the lives of their children.

Collaborative divorce is an invitation to embark somewhere together, with privacy, respect, and cooperation. As a collaboratively trained attorney, I provide clients in Broward and Palm Beach County with the tools and advocacy needed to help them embrace their new tomorrow through the Collaborative Divorce method.

Summer can shine a literal and figurative light on underlying struggles within a marriage. Many divorces aren’t just a decision you wake up one day and make, but are the result of a string of events — years of issues piling on top of each other and putting pressure on the relationship until it crumbles.

At some point, you may decide that divorce is the best move for one (or both) of you if you’ve been coping with an unhappy relationship for some time. Divorce coaches (more on this topic in an upcoming Horowitz Highlights) explain that when there’s been too much neglect, damage, or depletion of all the necessary elements to cultivate a healthy relationship, the marriage has run its course.

Even if you or someone you know is undecided about divorce, speaking with a Family Law attorney early on helps one explore the process, how property division, parenting plans, and spousal support work, and what options there are in moving forward. At Sara Horowitz Law, the initial consultation is always complimentary! Know that you don’t have to figure this out alone. We are here to help every step of the way.
